One of the world's best athletes has taken on a new challenge. Challenges are nothing new for Gea Johnson so it shouldn't surprise you that she has another one in her sights. Gea is taking on the sport of track cycling. And it didn't take her long to start tearing up the track. Just months after hopping on a borrowed bike and receiving some friendly and expert coaching from Scottsdale's Strada Racing Club, Gea amazingly owned four state records. She racked up four gold medals and two silvers at the 2010 Arizona State Track Cycling Championships. Shortly after, she became a fan favorite at USA Cycling Masters National Championships in Frisco, Texas where she faced yet another unexpected obstacle. During a sprint competition, a collision left her with a broken wrist and elbow. Minutes later and in excruciating pain, Gea got back in the saddle and won her first medal at the National Championships. The next day, she skipped her warm-up, wrapped her injuries with duct tape, fought through the pain, and grabbed two more medals. Winning three bronze medals in all, she also earned the respect of everyone in the velodrome. "Duct tape was the only thing we could find that would help." Gea laughs. Now it's her trademark. The sport of track cycling is a perfect fit for the Olympian, as Gea can take advantage of her jaw-dropping explosiveness and power. "Gea Johnson is the best athlete to ever walk through my doors" says Ian Danney, owner of Performance Enhancement Professionals, the Scottsdale training facility that attracts world class track athletes, Olympians, champion boxers, NFL and NHL superstars. With her injuries healed, Gea is back on her bike, determined to go faster than ever. She started working with cyclist/coach, Lionel Space, of Phoenix, Arizona and in December of 2011 she set an American Record. The next summer, July of 2012, she won 3 National Titles, breaking 2 more American Records and setting 2 World Records!! In 2013, Gea won 2 more National Titles and broke one of her own World Records 2 more times. She soon attracted the attention of World Renown Japanese Keirin specialist and Track Cycling coach, Henry Shibata, and immediately became his student. His "zen-like sensei" guidance, expertise, and coaching, helped Gea catapult and emerge onto the Elite scene. At the age of 46, Gea stood on the podium at the 2013 Elite Nationals next to a 20 year old and a 23 year old - dreams and aspirations are NOT limited or dictated by age! Several weeks later in Ocotber of 2013, one of Gea's cycling goals became a reality. Gea became a Masters World Champion, winning both of her events in M Gea had her sights set on the 2015 World Championships and 2016 Olympics, but discovered that the politics in USA cycling worked against her.
